Going into my second day of shadowing I feel like I was more prepared for what was going to happen throughout the day. I understood the process of how we approach a patient everyday. Each patient is given an order which means that they either see a speech therapist 2-3 times a week or 5-6 times a week. Since it's my second day I started to notice how it was mostly all the same people coming in to do speech therapy. The main thing I learned today was that when you are working as a speech therapist you have to have a lot of patience especially with older patients. Most of the older patients are losing their memory or forget instructions easily and quickly after you tell them. So with every patient you have to be very patient. It can be hard at times but, you are there to help them not yourself.

Today was the first day of my journey of shadowing a speech therapist. Throughout the day I got to work with patients and observe many different cases that requires people to use speech therapy. For example, when a speech therapist is working with a dementia patient they try to work that person's brain whether it be by giving them worksheets that promotes abstract thinking or asking them questions to help work their memory. Speech therapy is just like physical therapy except instead of working your body physically you're working your body mentally.
Welcome to my blog! I will be posting updates throughout my experience of shadowing a speech therapist for my independent study at school. The lady I will be shadowing is Mrs. Diane Blausey who works at Heartland of Perrysburg. Mrs. Blausey is a speech therapist and has been working with the elderly for many years. I am beyond excited to be given the opportunity to be able to shadow her and learn about the profession of being a speech therapist. By the end of this independent study I hope I will be able to decide if I want to continue on the path to becoming a speech therapist for my career or going a different route.
